What are orthotics?

Orthotics are insoles that you put into your shoes to reduce pain and improve function in your foot, ankle and leg.

What do orthotics do?

Orthotics can reduce pain and improve function in your foot in a variety of ways.

  1. Improve the posture of your foot so no muscle(s) is overworking.
  2. Alter the bio-mechanics of your foot to change how your foot hits the ground.
  3. Off-load a particular part(s) of your foot that are taking too much pressure.

Do you need orthotics?

Orthotics can be very helpful in the following conditions:

  • Plantar Fasciitis (heel pain)
  • Achilles pain
  • Painful Bunions
  • Ball of the foot pain
  • Fallen Arches
  • Shin pain
  • Calf pain
  • Knee pain
  • Hip pain
  • Back pain

How do we prescribe orthotics?

Your foot shape is unique to you. A comprehensive assessment of your foot posture is required to first decide whether orthotics are appropriate for you.

If Sean decide that orthotics are suitable, he will use that assessment to prescribe and customise the orthotics to your feet.

Sean utilises two different types of orthotics, stock devices and custom-made devices.

Stock Orthotics

Stock orthotics pre-made insoles designed to address the most common types of foot abnormalities and issues. They don’t require a mould or cast of your foot to be taken.

Price: €60

Getting the right prescription for orthotics can sometimes be a trial-and-error process. Sean can make considerable changes to stock devices depending on what your foot likes and doesn’t like.

He often starts a patients off with a stock device to find out what most benefits your foot. Stock orthotics generally last 6-12 months before they need to be replaced.

Custom Orthotics

Once Sean know exactly what support your foot requires, he can make a Custom Orthotic.

This requires a mould be taken of your foot so that the arch support exactly matches the arch profile of your foot.

Custom orthotics last forever, and only become unsuitable if the shape of foot changes (i.e. due to arthritis or fracture).

Price: €275
